Don’t Torture Your Skin: Don’t over-exfoliate your skin!

I need to share my experience with you

More and more customers book a skin consultation with badly damaged, over-exfoliated skin. Over and over again I see thin skin with extremely dry patches on the upper layer, and most of them have sebum trapped under the skin.


Layers of the skin

The stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin) has a very important role. It is our real protection from the outside world.

Its cells contain a dense network of keratin surrounded by intercellular lipids. Keratin is a form of protein that helps keep the skin hydrated by preventing water loss and determines the permeability of the skin. This barrier is only 0.01-0.02 mm thick and very sensitive to external influences. It needs to be protected! 


What can damage the top of the skin?

The frequent use of detergent, the sun, weather, pollution, and abrasive products, like face brushes, skin scrubs, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning.

Damage to it can lead to increased loss of moisture and dry, flaky skin, and eczema.


What happens when we constantly remove the corneal layer of the skin?

Your skin is more intelligent than you are. If there is an aggression it’s going to try to fix it by thickening the layers of dead skin.

Think about your feet, if you remove the dead dry skin from your heel with a blade or with that rotating electric callus removal tool, it will grow back thicker quite soon.



If we can cause microscopic lesions even when scratching our skin, imagine how it works with microparticles, brushes and devices when it’s difficult to control the pressure applied.

These lesions are the getaway to other issues: germs and chemicals that don’t belong to that layer and can cause inflammation and therefore hyperpigmentation.



Anyone who exfoliates at a high frequency accelerates the ageing process. The initial brightness may look youthful for a while, however, the constant and aggressive removal of skin sebum, protection cells and circles of inflammation and sensitivity lead to chronic stress of the skin.


Acne breakouts

Acne is the most common skin condition. It is not limited to teenagers and impacts 20% of adults between the ages of 25 and 44.

Outside triggers, such as your mobile phone, used yoga mats, and pillowcases are full of dirt, bacteria, and oil, which may contribute to your breakouts. Hereditary, hormonal, or environmental factors can also maximise breakouts.


My advice to improve your delicate skin the right way!

The damage is already bigger than you think.

If you are already in a ‘catch 22’ situation, don’t try to fix it by yourself! 

As I have already mentioned, over-exfoliating and over cleansing can aggravate acne problems because it dries out your skin and produces oil as a result. To build your proper skincare routine, and for professional advice, book an appointment with us.

It is also important to maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated to improve the quality of your skin.

Drink water! When you drink water you feel hydrated within the body and the skin. Believe it or not but it slows down the ageing process. Make a timer on your phone to drink at least 8 cups a day, this will help remind you every day until it becomes a habit.


Also, small amounts of the sun at a time can be beneficial for acne. It is suggested that 10 to 20 minutes is optimal. However, large amounts of the sun can cause more breakouts and darken existing acne scars. SPF is paramount when in the sun for any amount of time.

Lastly, ensure that you sleep. Your body needs a substantial amount of rest so you can start the day feeling good and refreshed. Without enough sleep, it can increase the number of wrinkles and dark circles around your eyes to show that you are sleep deprived. The best way to avoid this is by sleeping at least 7 or 8 hours uninterrupted.
